TO COME out clean in the case of a disabled Grab driver being allegedly punched on the face by a police escort to a royalty, an in-depth investigation covering three main aspects of the case is essential.
Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng has urged the police to centre their investigation on three main aspects starting with the way the investigating officer handled Ong Ing Keong last Tuesday (May 28).
“Do they carry out their duties with professionalism and empathy or is there an element of abuse of power or neglect of responsibility?” he pointed out in a media statement.
“Secondly, who was responsible in drafting the content of the second police report for Ong (when he retracted his first report)? Was the report made with his willingness and honesty or was there another party that influenced or changed the content of the report?”
Thirdly, the four-term DAP lawmaker (two terms each for Segambit and Kepong) wishes to know if the deaf-mute Ong, 46, has indeed received a “compensation payment” of RM800 and from whom was the payment received from.
“Is this payment meant to silence Ong? Apart from answering the accusations made by Ong, the police also need to explain under what circumstances they can confiscate someone’s mobile phone,” asserted Lim who is also the DAP Kuala Lumpur state committee (2021-2024).
“With thorough investigations and clear explanations, we can ensure that people’s rights are protected and justice is upheld without any compromise.”
For context, Ong is expected to lodge a third police report at the Jalan Travers police station in Kuala Lumpur at 11.30am today (June 1) following a media conference yesterday (May 31) by the Lawyers for Liberty’s (LFL) where Ong was able to relate the entire ordeal which occurred on when he was picking up passengers at the lobby of the St Regis Hotel in Kuala Lumpur on May 28.
The media conference was chaired by LFL adviser Latheefa who later said that lawyer N. Surendran and LFL director Zaid Malek will be representing the Ong in his case.
In the meantime, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said Bukit Aman will summon all officers involved in investigating the case of a disabled man allegedly assaulted by a police security escort.
Separately, Johor Regent Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim has urged the authorities to investigate thoroughly the incident where a police officer escort is alleged to have committed a harmful act.
On a similar note, Tunku Ismail also called on all quarters to allow the authorities to carry out the investigation as there has been attempts to drag the royal institution into the alleged assault.
“I’m also aware that there is a movement to drag the royal institution by using this incident to link the actions of an external security personnel with myself and the entire royal institution which is uncalled for,” he added. – June 1, 2024
