KEPONG MP Lim Lip Eng has submitted an emergency motion in relation to a serious exposure by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) deputy chief commissioner (operations) Datuk Seri Ahmad Khusairi Yahaya’s to the speaker’s office this morning.
Kushairi had on Monday (March 27) claimed that corruption among law enforcement officers who are seen as security frontliners “is becoming more chronic and worrying”.
In this regard, Lim strongly urged the unity government to take the necessary efforts to reduce and eliminate corruption among law enforcement officers.
The DAP lawmaker further stressed the necessity of urgently discussing the matter in the Dewan Rakyat along with immediate and long-term measures to put an end to such “horrific practices”.
“The Dewan Rakyat should also consider whether law enforcement agencies should be directly placed under the Parliament’s jurisdiction,” he suggested in his emergency motion.
“Moreover, the fundamental goal of the Dewan Rakyat is to put an end to the unscrupulous actions of law enforcement officers who are willing to jeopardise national security.”
Given the issue revolves around human health and safety, Lim justified that it is no longer an isolated issue given the corrupt behaviour of a few law enforcement officials from various agencies could pose “severe negative effect on the general public, especially those who are in vulnerable groups”.
“If corrupt practices among government agency members are not halted as they should be, the national economy would suffer as a result of a lack of trust among local and international investors in the government due to enforcement members failing to reflect transparency and ethical governance,” he noted.
“If this issue is not resolved, our country risks becoming the most impoverished nation in Southeast Asia.” — March 29, 2023
