DAP, PKR to attend UMNO AGM for the first time, Anwar is guest of honour

DAP and PKR leaders will attend UMNO’s annual general assembly (AGM) for the first time in history.

“The presidents of all parties in the unity government, including Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will attend the general assembly which will be held at the World Trade Centre (WTC) here from June 7 to 10,” said UMNO secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki at a press conference today.

“This year is a bit different because the PM will be attending our AGM, together with the 19 other party presidents under the unity government.”

Asyraf also pointed out that this will be a historical moment for all the various parties that form the government to attend the UMNO AGM.

Moreover, Asyraf denied reports that UMNO Youth did not extend invitations to their counterparts in the other parties in the unity government.

According to Asyraf, the respective wings will follow the lead of the main leadership. If UMNO itself is inviting the unity government’s parties, then they will follow suit.

UMNO did not invite any leaders of the unity administration to the 2022 Annual General Assembly, which was held in January.

Meanwhile, Asyraf claimed that UMNO wanted to alter several sections of its constitution during this year’s assembly, including the ability to register as a party member online.

As of now, any request to join the party needs to be approved by the head of the relevant UMNO branch.

Asyraf added that their Youth wing informed them that there are many youngsters who want to join UMNO but find the process difficult. He noted that he wants to make it easier for people to join UMNO by allowing them to apply online.

Furthermore, he stated that only delegates will be allowed to participate but those who miss the party are still welcome to be at the WTC and shop around at the booths. – June 2, 2023
