AT the DAP Socialist Youth (DAPSY) National Congress 2024, outgoing chief Dr Kelvin Yii Lee Wuen warned his party against neglecting its grassroots support, drawing a parallel to the US Democrats’ loss in recent elections.
Yii argued that the Democrats’ failure to engage their traditional base, as they focused on attracting Republican crossover voters, led to a lower voter turnout and the Republicans’ victory.
He emphasised that the DAP must ensure it instills confidence in its core supporters and advocates for issues that resonate with diverse groups.
“The Democrats took for granted their (support) base during the elections. This serves as a lesson and a reminder that our grassroots supports should never be taken lightly.
“If we do not instil confidence in their hearts, we will lose our support in the blink of an eye,” he told delegates during his speech at the DAPSY National Congress 2024 here at Centro Mall.
Yii also urged DAPSY leaders to avoid demagoguery and toxic politics, while supporting the unity government as the best option for Malaysia at this time.
He was succeeded by Woo Kah Leong as the new DAPSY chief. —Nov 17, 2024
