Death in custody: Detainee died of COVID-19 and TB, police say

A POST-MORTEM has found no sign of injury or criminal element in the recent death of a detainee at the Indera Mahkota Centralised Lock-up, according to Bukit Aman’s Integrity and Standards Compliance Department (Jips) director Datuk Azri Ahmad.

Instead, the pathologist’s preliminary finding was that the detainee died of “acute on chronic lung infection with underlying pulmonary tuberculosis with COVID-19”. The case has been classified as sudden death.

“However, the Jips’ Criminal and Custodial Death Investigation Unit will continue investigations from various angles before presenting findings of the investigation to the coroner for a decision,” Azri added.

He said the detainee had died at the facility in Kuantan, Pahang on April 9, and the post-mortem was carried out at the Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital yesterday.

Previously, it was reported that the detainee was serving an eight-month jail sentence under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and was due to attend a court mention on April 14.

Prior to this, he was held at the Penor Prison in Kuantan.

He was given tuberculosis medicine at 4.40pm on April 9 and was later found unconscious at 5.47pm when lock-up staff distributed food for the breaking of fast.

He was pronounced dead at the Kuantan hospital at 6.35pm on the same day. – April 12, 2022
