DATUK Seri Najib Razak’s personal/private banking code name in AmPrivate Banking is “MR”.
Joanna Yu Ging Ping, 51 (main pic), former AmBank’s customer relations manager, told the Kuala Lumpur High Court that the former prime minister was the first individual to be given a code name.
Both the use of code name and the selection of “MR” were suggested by now-fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho a.ka. Jho Low.
“MR” can stand for “Mr Razak”. In the English naming system, Najib will be called “Mr Razak”. They take Razak as a “surname” or surname even although Malays generally don’t use or have surnames.

To them, I am “Mr Jasin” and my children are either “Miss” or “Mr Abdul Kadir”. However, in an Arab speaking place, my name will be “Abdul Qadir”. “Qadir” only is not allowed as it is among the names of Allah (Muslim God). Among Spanish speakers, I am “Señor Yasin”. “Jasin” is pronounced as “Yasin” in Spanish.
Back to the “MR” code name, it can also carry the meaning of “Malaysian ringgit”. But for us the common people, “MR” can mean “Malaysia Rosak” (literally “Spoilt Malaysia”).
What is not less interesting is that the use of “MR” code name had been made known to the then Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) Governor Tan Sri Zeti Akhtar Aziz.
If Najib is given a code name in his bank account, one wonders if he also has a code name in the prison. Or at least a prison number. – Oct 14, 2022
