FORMER PKR vice-president Chua Tian Chang condemned top-down endorsements in PKR as “unhealthy”, emphasising that the party should prioritise independent delegate votes to reflect grassroots sentiment.
He warned that Nurul Izzah Anwar’s bid for deputy president could impact her father, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, regardless of the result.
“If Nurul Izzah loses the party elections, it would seem that she does not have the support in the party, which will reflect on Anwar as well,” FMT quoted Chua as saying.
Conversely, he noted, “if she does win the election, other parties will say Anwar protected her and gave her ‘a bed of roses’ to take over the party.”
He also spoke of a succession crisis as Nurul Izzah challenges deputy president Rafizi Ramli in the upcoming PKR polls.
Chua suggests Nurul Izzah’s bid could further impact Anwar’s reputation, risking perceptions of nepotism if she wins or weakness if she loses.
He speculated that a “hidden figure” may have prompted her candidacy, potentially driving Rafizi’s camp to exit, weakening PKR. — May 10, 2025
