Demand for recount denied, Tengku Razaleigh to challenge EC decision next

VETERAN UMNO lawmaker Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah has announced that he will be challenging the Election Commission’s (EC) decision to deny him a recount in Gua Musang following his defeat by just 163 votes

The veteran politician, better known as Ku Li, lost by just 163 votes to Datuk Mohd Azizi Abu Naim of PAS, who secured 21,826 votes.

According to election guidelines, losing candidates are entitled to a recount should the margin of victory for the leading candidate be less than 4%.

Tengku Razaleigh – the oldest Barisan Nasional candidate – was seeking a 13th term. He has been Gua Musang MP since 1974 when the constituency was named Ulu Kelantan. In GE14 in 2018, he won by a majority of 3,913 votes against candidates from PAS and PKR.

According to news reports, the 83-year-old Tengku Razaleigh had three times voiced his reluctance to contest in the polls.

He was reported as saying that he was asked to contest in Gua Musang as there were concerns that the seat would no longer be a “safe” seat should it be given to another candidate. – Nov 20, 2022
