Deputy health DG: 2nd dose doesn’t mean we should remove restrictions hastily

MALAYSIA should learn from other countries that relaxing restrictions even for those who have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19, has led to an increase in the number of cases, said the health ministry.

Several countries in Europe and the United States allowed social activities to take place due to their high vaccination rates, but these countries might have eased up prematurely as they are now facing a spike in COVID-19 cases, said health deputy director-general Dr Hishamshah Mohd Ibrahim during a press conference today.

“We must learn lessons from these countries. Although those with two doses of vaccines are more protected from being severely infected with COVID-19, this does not mean that we should remove the existing restrictions hastily,” he remarked.

According to Hishamshah, the Government is carefully approaching the matter, adding that it must first ensure the country ramps up its vaccination rate and continues to practise strict compliance to the standard operating procedures (SOPs).

“The current dominant variants are more transmissible and infectious, and therefore people should always wear a face mask, practise physical distancing and avoid large gatherings,” he added.

Hishamshah’s statement came after Prime Minister Tan Sri Mahiaddin Yassin’s announcement yesterday (Aug 5) that the relaxation of the SOPs for those who are fully vaccinated will be announced within the next two days.

In addition to allowing travelling and dining-in, the easing of restrictions for those who have completed their second doses are expected to also include allowing people to carry out sport activities.

However, Mahiaddin has stressed that even with the relaxation, the public should always continue to be vigilant against COVID-19, as the country has yet to achieve herd immunity s some are still not fully vaccinated. – Aug 6, 2021
