Deserted by hubby & mosque, pregnant Muslim convert wife touched by church willing to help her

“I THINK better for me to return to my former religion. I left my family to convert to Islam. Before marriage, my husband promised me a better life but after having converted and married, he left me for another woman while I’m pregnant.”

One should not generalise here but such was seemingly the misery endured by a penniless Muslim convert woman who is contemplating returning to her previous religion after failing to seek help from prominent Islamic institutions, namely the mosque and zakat (tithe).

“I’m now traumatised (as she apologises for being offensive) with Malay men in Malaysia … I’m left penniless and pregnant which makes it hard to fund a job,: she poured her heart out in a TikTok post by @bossariffpeter.

“Left with no choice since nobody was willing to employ me (due to her pregnancy), I went to a mosque to seek help but people at the mosque thought I’m a scammer and chased me away,” she recounted amid sobs.

“I also tried zakat but was told it’s compulsory to have my husband with me (to apply for aid), But my husband has left me without any clue of his whereabout.

“I was at a loss … As the last option, I went to a church to seek help and they willingly do their best to help me. They look after my living cost and helped me out of my misery. This is better than the mosque and zakat …”

Digital creator kamaghul deghaman (@kamaghul) who re-posted the TikTok clip on X expressed profound sadness at the fate of the Muslim convert wife while praying for her to be relieved of her personal anguish.

But netizens are less forgiving with one commenter bluntly claiming that “many mosque folks are too busy with politics in the mosque”.

Another lambasted both the husband the mosque which could have made a home visit to verify the woman’s claim rather than accusing her to be a “scammer”. “It’s a shame that the church is willing to help her when the mosque has refused to do so,” lamented the netizen.

Another commenter likened the experience of the Muslim convert woman to “irresponsible conversion” or simply, “converting people just to increase the number of followers”.

One commenter rued at the behaviour of Malay men “who harbour dream of courting Kazakhstan and Russian girls when they can’t even care for a Malaysian amoi (slang for young Chinese girls)”.

“This issue of leaving a wife stranded without compassion has already been a common occurrence since the time of our forefathers but this time it went viral because there’s video (evidence),” she observed.

Another proposed to JAKIM (Department of Islamic Development Malaysia) that instead of nabbing people for not fasting during Ramadan or for stealing shoes and prayer mats, it’s time to nab irresponsible husbands.

One netizen contended that, in all honesty, it is not surprising that some Malays are attracted to Christianity considering that churches “help them greatly when they face hardship while mosques are so stingy to even fork out a single sen”.

As one netizen summed up “this is how (the) church always wins” given not enough is done to build a positive perception of Islam. – May 23, 2025
