Dewan Rakyat: Monday sitting postponed due to COVID-19 risks

THE Dewan Rakyat sitting, scheduled to resume on Monday, has been postponed due to COVID-19 cases being detected at the august house.

Dewan Rakyat secretary Nizam Mydin Bach Mydin announced that the matter was decided by Prime Minister Tan Sri Mahiaddin Yassin, under Standing Order 11 (3).

“The postponement is in line with Health Ministry (MOH) director general’s advise, after conducting risk assessment following COVID-19 cases being detected at the Parliament.

“The MOH opined that the Parliament was at risk due to COVID-19,” he said, in a circular today.

Nizam issued the circular on the instruction from Dewan Rakyat deputy speaker, Datuk Mohd Rashid Hasnon.

Last week, the Parliament announced that 56 COVID-19 cases have been detected at its premises, triggering fears among MPs and staff members.

However, the decision is set to raise objection among MPs opposed to the Government, following Istana Negara’s rebuke against the latter for misleading the Parliament on the revocation of Emergency, which the Agong had said did not receive his consent. – July 31, 2021
