MAN on the Run director Cassius Michael Kim described former premier Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s attempt to withdraw the documentary from Netflix as a desperate attempt to hide the truth about his involvement in the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) scandal.
“In the US, we believe in freedom of the press. Najib is once again trying to silence those who will reveal the truth about his actions even though what he said (in the documentary) was from his own mouth,” New Straits Times (NST) quoted Cassius as saying today.
He was commenting to NST on the letter from the former prime minister to the Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil, asking the ministry to remove the documentary from Netflix.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has also said he will consider Najib’s request to the government but has forwarded the request to Fahmi who has said nothing on the matter so far except that three days ago, he said he did not receive any request to remove Man on the Run from Netflix.
Nevertheless, human rights group Lawyers for Liberty (LFL) today warned the government against considering Najib’s request to take down the documentary from Netflix.
In a statement, LFL director Zaid Malek said it would be unlawful for Putrajaya to consider or allow such an application because Netflix is an over-the-top internet streaming service platform and thus not subjected to the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (CMA). – Jan 13, 2023
