Deputy minister shares her harrowing experience of flight’s failed landing in Kota Baru

WOMEN, Family and Community Development Deputy Minister Datuk Seri Noraini Ahmad recounted a harrowing experience as her flight to Kota Baru, Kelantan, attempted three failed landings due to severe rain and storms.

Writing on Facebook, she detailed the tense moments she experienced during the attempted landings.

The Parit Sulong MP said it’s difficult to describe her feelings when they were up in the air.

“It was a scary experience. The pilot attempted to land three times. The aircraft was making rounds. All the feelings are there. Wanting to cry, wanting to vomit.. It was very scary,” she penned in her Facebook page on Saturday (Dec 23).

The plane was unable to touch down at Sultan Ismail Petra Airport and was forced to return to Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang.

Moreover, Noraini expressed gratitude to the pilot for ensuring their safe return and acknowledged the need to learn from the incident.

Expressing regret to the people of Kelantan, she was scheduled for a programme there.

MetMalaysia warned of continuous heavy rain in Kelantan, Terengganu, and Pahang until Dec 25. Following that, overseas flights are also being diverted due to the weather.

Furthermore, the Federal Aviation Administration data reveals that 75% of US flight delays result from weather conditions.

Aviation meteorologist Kyle Struckmann outlines four weather types impacting flight schedules, starting with winds influencing safe takeoffs and landings.

Crosswinds can complicate landings, and wind direction aligns with airport runways. Low visibility due to fog or snow triggers delays, necessitating clear views near runways. – Dec 24, 2023
