EC confirms low voter turnout for Pulai and Simpang Jeram due to heavy rain

THE voter turnout at the by-elections as of 3pm is 38% for Pulai and 51% for Simpang Jeram, the Election Commission (EC) stated.

The voting process in the two by-elections was going smoothly and under control without any untoward incidents, EC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Salleh told Bernama.

At the start of voting this morning, he said he hopes the EC’s target of more than 70% voter turnout will be achieved.

Pulai has a total of 166,653 registered voters while there are 40,488 registered voters in Simpang Jeram.

The Pulai parliamentary by-election had a lower voter turnout than the Simpang Jeram state seat due to unfavourable weather conditions, said Abdul Ghani Salleh.

Nevertheless, the voting process in both by-elections had been smooth and it was hoped that the target turnout of over 70% would be achieved.

“Most voters who turned up this morning were in channels one, two and three, and younger individuals might take some extra time to cast their votes later in the afternoon,” he told a press conference.
