Economy Ministry promises full support for public service reforms

ECONOMY Ministry helmed by Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli has pledged full support for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s public service reforms aimed at boosting productivity and efficiency.

This follows Anwar’s announcement of a long-awaited salary increase for civil servants, ranging from 7% to 15%, which comes with a call for significant reforms.

The reforms are intended to improve public sector performance and address issues such as early retirements among teachers.

“We welcome his wishes to reform the public service with a special emphasis on aspects of productivity and service efficiency.

“Civil servants are always ready to make changes—a paradigm shift in terms of behaviour and thinking so that ultimately the country’s competitiveness can be increased. The government is committed to reforming public services,” it said.

Meanwhile, National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) president Aminuddin Awang welcomed the new Public Service Remuneration System (SSPA), which replaces the old Malaysian Remuneration Scheme (SSM).

He believes the phased salary increases will reduce early retirements and motivate teachers. The initial phase of the SSPA implementation is expected to start in December.

“Teachers will benefit from both annual salary increases (KGT) and additional adjustments under the SSPA.

“After 12 years without a review, replacing the Malaysian Renumeration Scheme (SSM) with the SSPA is a meaningful improvement. This move should help reduce early retirements and motivate teachers to provide excellent service in appreciation of the government’s support,” he told Bernama. – Aug 18, 2024
