Enact Political Fund Act and park MACC under the Parliament, Pakatan says

PAKATAN HARAPAN urged the Government to enact several measures to stem corruption in the country, as court cases reveal disturbing details of prominent personalities being compromised.

“Among the measures we need to come up with is to enact a Political Fund Act. Plus, we must also place the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) under the Parliament,” its presidential council said, in a statement.

As of now, the MACC is parked under the purview of the Prime Minister’s Department.

On June 7, former chief secretary to the Government Tan Sri Sidek Hassan raised eyebrows when he told the court that he received RM30,000 a month in advisory fee, while sitting on the 1Malaysia Development Bhd’s (1MDB) board of advisors (BoA) for almost two years for “doing nothing”.

He said this as a prosecution witness for the 1MDB corruption trial involving former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

“I was under the assumption that my appointment in 1MDB was only to increase my income as chief secretary to the government, which Datuk Seri Najib considered was not commensurate,” The Edge reported him as saying back then.

In the trial involving former deputy prime minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, a director from Ultra Kirana Sdn Bhd (UKSB) told the court that he had been paying the former between SDG200,000 and SGD520,000.

Wan Quoris Shah Wan Abdul Ghani, 42, also said that Rembau UMNO division has received between RM50,000 and RM200,000.

On that note, Pakatan said the exposes made in court is raising a lot of questions, adding it was peculiar that Sidek was getting paid by another entity while serving as the top civil servant of the country.

“Both the cases are worrying as not only it involves political heavyweights but also senior civil servants,” it mentioned. – June 14, 2022
