Energy minister quits Cabinet as Umno pulls out from Perikatan

DEALING another blow to the Perikatan Nasional Government, Energy and Natural Resources Minister Datuk Seri Shamsul Anuar Nasarah announced his resignation from the Cabinet.

The Umno leader said that he made the decision following his party’s latest stand on its cooperation with the ruling coalition.

“I made the decision as I’m loyal to the party. I would like to thank Prime Minister Tan Sri Mahiaddin Yassin for giving me the opportunity to serve the country.

“My gratitude and appreciation also go to all who worked with me in the ministry. Henceforth, I will pay more attention on my work as Lenggong MP and help strengthen Umno in these challenging times,” he added.

On related matter, Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced that the party was withdrawing support from the Perikatan Nasional coalition and Prime Minister Tan Sri Mahiaddin Yassin.

Elaborating, he said that Umno could no longer support a Government that is failing the people during a crisis, while showing disrespect to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong at the same time.

“The Agong has decreed several times for the Emergency and its ordinances (EO) to be debated at the Parliament in the last session, as per Article 150 (3) of the Federal Constitution.

“And Mahiaddin’s statement today clearly shows that he has scant regard to His Majesty’s decree. In fact, I believe the prime minister is turning the whole thing into a mockery,” the Bagan Datuk MP added.

The former deputy prime minister then urged Mahiaddin to do the honorable thing by taking responsibility over his action and resign.

“All Umno leaders have endorsed this decision by signing letters of support, which has been presented to the Agong,” he remarked. – Aug 3, 2021.
