Establish RCI to probe “police cartel” claims, DAP leader says

THE Government should establish a royal commission of inquiry to investigate allegations that “cartels” are controlling the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) instead of issuing a mere denial, said a former minister.

“The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani denied the existence of cartels when it came to promotions within the force, contradicting claims made by his predecessor.

“This is alarming as two IGPs are saying two different things and the allegation cannot be simply dismissed.

“And the former IGP, Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador must not remain silent and reveal more to the public so that truth can prevail,” said M Kula Segaran, in a statement.

Yesterday, Acryl Sani dismissed the existence of “cartels” in the police force or any other external interference when it came to determining promotions in the force.

“Such cartels don’t exist because if does, we will be seeing certain individuals being at the forefront.

“What is certain is that promotions of officers go through several levels, from the contingent and management department, before coming to me.

“Then, it’s brought to the police force commission for the final decision. This is how stringent the process is,” Sinar Harian quoted him as saying.

Last year, Hamid caused a stir when he alleged that a “cartel of dirty cops in cahoots with criminals” were attempting to depose him from office.

In February, the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC) stated that it was unable to confirm Hamid’s claims, saying it found no basis to the former IGP’s allegations.

We need IPCMC

After that, Hamid shot back at EAIC chairman Tan Sri Sidek Hassan for dismissing it and said if given protection, many police officers would come out to speak of matter.

On that note, Kula Segaran said the allegations were getting out of hand as the police were investigating it themselves, which may not instil public confidence on the matter.

“This is why we need the Independent Police Complaints and Monitoring Commission (IPCMC). I personally have lodged a police report on Hamid’s claims but nothing has come forth.

“In any case, this is a matter of public interest and the public has a right to know if the allegations made were actually true.

“And the number of custodial deaths in the last few months have also increased and it’s very troubling. It goes to show that there are still many areas to be looked into when it comes to improving the police force,” the Ipoh Barat MP mentioned. – April 3, 2022
