WE all need some peace and quiet to do our big business. A clean toilet certainly helps too. Who would want to step on a puddle of urine or the residue of another’s “chocolate cake?”
But when the interior design of a toilet goes a little too far to appeal to the user, it might instead be a source of extreme awkwardness.
Take for example a recent video post on X which shows a toilet complete with a Koi pond. And yes, there are live fishes. And yes, the user could also access the other toilets since there is no partition to bar his or her movement.
Design ingenuity or public humiliation, you decide.
Apa guna ada pintu kalau masuk dalam pun orang boleh intai..😅😂

The brief video provided no information as to where the toilet was located and the comment section was no help either. Regardless, it raises an interesting point on design for public spaces.
Also, it bears some similarities to the HiPoPo PaPa restaurant in Akashi, Japan, where the toilet is surrounded by a massive aquarium. A stolen idea?
According to the owner, the toilet is available only for female patrons because it is believed that women are “cleaner users.”
On another note, the Koi fish also symbolises luck, prosperity, and good fortune, as well as perseverance in the face of adversity in Japanese culture.
The Koi’s ability to swim upstream against currents is a metaphor for resilience and the potential for personal growth. So does it mean people who poop there get to enjoy all these benefits?
According to the website Bokksu, Koi can get pretty big which means caretakers should supply the pond with about 1,000 gallons of water per Koi. If they plan to keep the fish outside all year long, the pond needs to be pretty deep too.
One can only wonder how those poor Koi fishes could live inside those narrow troughs of water, and smelling the stink of human poop at the side. —June 27, 2025
