Factory raided for unauthorised use of halal logo in Kamunting

A factory producing kaya (coconut jam) in Taman Glenview, Kamunting, was raided yesterday on suspicion of using the halal logo without authorisation from the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM).

The raid was carried out by enforcement officers from the Perak State KPDN Taiping Branch.

During the inspection, it was discovered that the factory was manufacturing kaya, and further checks revealed that the packaging displayed the halal logo.

This product is believed to be distributed for sale in both Perak and Penang. The investigation found that the factory owner could not provide a valid Halal certification.

Perak Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) director Datuk Kamalludin Ismail stated that a total of 65 units of finished kaya products and 2,000 plastic containers bearing the halal logo, intended for trade, along with relevant documents, were seized. The estimated value of the confiscated items is RM452.25.

Although the factory has been operational since 1994 and previously held a halal certificate, it had expired. The case remains under investigation. – Sept 11, 2024
