THE phrase “have your cake and eat it too” means a person can’t have it both ways. But as a birthday boy found out recently, he wasn’t even allowed to cut it, never mind eat it!
Recounting an unpleasant recent experience at the Cili Kampung @Alamanda restaurant, Threader nessss (@hanesness) was left stunned and speechless by the conduct of another family dining at the establishment.

A birthday cake was purportedly sent to that family’s table by mistake. Instead of querying whose order it was, the wrong recipients proceeded to cut the cake and serve themselves.
When the error was noticed, this recalcitrant family was not only unapologetic but also gave dagger stares to the diners who the cake was meant for.
End result? Mood spoiled as birthday boy didn’t get to cut his cake.
It was also asked if that cake was ‘halal’ for the family who had devoured food clearly not meant for them.
The poster also added that there was no apology forthcoming from the family for devouring a cake not theirs. The blame for the mistake eventually fell on the staff while that family even got to keep the balance of the butchered cake to take home.
To add insult to injury, the poster was left dumbfounded when it was suggested that the price of the cake was split between the two families – the one who ate it and the one whom it was actually meant for.
Members of the aggrieved party’s entourage also chipped in with pictures of the butchered cake, sharing that the birthday boy was in tears at being denied his special moment.
Note that the cake was apparently brought from Baskin Robbins specially as a birthday treat. It was handed to the staff to keep chilled but was mistakenly handed to the other family.
Hence, a simple like-for-like replacement at the Cili Kampung @ Alamanda party venue was not possible, thus causing all sorts of unhappiness in the birthday boy.
This little cake war generated plenty of feedback, with plenty of spite reserved for the family that was seen as unreasonable and somewhat uncouth with their mannerisms.
This episode was also recounted by ali hafiz (@Alihafizsahar) who was part of the birthday boy’s entourage (the boy’s daddy, it is presumed) who demanded to know what was the restaurant’s SOP (standard operating procedure) on such arrangements.
He also could not hide his disdain for the family who devoured a cake not belonging to them on the flimsy basis that they wanted to make “less fuss”, thus feigning ignorance. “Most selfish and oblivious creature in Malaysia” was his damning verdict.

More than one commenter was shocked at the cake-devouring family’s suggestion that they split the cost of the cake. It was even remarked that the cake be lobbed back in their direction for even suggesting such a solution.
It was also surmised that this was the conduct of people pretending to be something they are not. This non-plussed observer could not wait for the time when such characters got their comeuppance.
A few cake connoisseurs mocked that surely the family should be aware that the wrong confectionary had been brought to their table. Even if a mistake was made, just open their mouths and ask to avoid such a messy episode.
Unable to conceal her irritation, this commenter asked what was so difficult with paying for an item which you had already consumed? It is not the paucity of funds that is the issue here but rather a lack of moral fibre, she harumphed.
Some suggested that such conduct has become normalised in Malaysia with certain people becoming used to accepting things NOT belonging to them.
“Rezeki” was often the excuse put forward. More than one pointedly asked if the cake was halal given it did not belong to them.
However, there were a few that professed zero sympathy for Cili Kampung @ Alamanda over this incident as the father of one of its directors is purportedly among those hauled up in the Tabung Haji scandal.
Regardless who owns the establishment, if indeed the scenario was accurately described, then there can only be negative descriptions for the conduct of the cake-gobbling family – “shameless”, “embarrassing”, “stupid” and “lacking common sense”.
