Opposition chief Anwar Ibrahim has said that 107 MPs from Pakatan Harapan (PH), Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s Bersatu faction and Sabah-based Warisan have pledged to stay united amid rumours that some from these camps will defect to Perikatan Nasional (PN).
“Regardless of the strategy, the opposition must stand firm together.
“There are currently 107 (MPs) of us in this group. We must make sure the people’s mandate is respected and that the confusion, disgrace and corruption must be stopped,” Anwar said. He did not elaborate further.
Yesterday, the top brass of PH, Bersatu and Warisan met at the PKR headquarters in Petaling Jaya to discuss matters and said they made “very positive” progress.
In a joint statement, the parties said any decision from the meeting will be finalised in the coming week.
“Today’s meeting saw a holistic discussion about each party’s stand and showed very positive progress.
“The process to finalise all decisions will be done within this week,” it said.
The statement was jointly signed by Anwar, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, Parti Amanah Negara president Mohamad Sabu, Bersatu’s disputed chairman Mahathir and Warisan president Mohd Shafie Apdal.
PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil said in a statement that day the meeting was chaired by Anwar and was held to ascertain each party leader’s sentiments at a time when the PH coalition appears to be on the brink of collapse.
“The meeting was to explore in detail each party’s stand currently, and the meeting was received positively by all,” Fahmi said in a statement.
Pakatan Plus – the moniker for a loose coalition consisting of PH, Mahathir’s Bersatu faction and Warisan – had gained an advantage in Parliament.
But those numbers have been disputed after the Bersatu supreme council decided to back Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, who is also Bersatu president. The party also went on to sack Mahathir and his allies. – June 10, 2020
