Najib to Tommy Thomas: Who was running AG Chambers, Dr M or you?

WITH ex-Attorney General (AG) Tan Sri Tommy Thomas making startling exposes in his memoir, many quarters are reading with shock on what transpired during Pakatan Harapan’s short-reign on federal power and what caused its fall from grace.

However, one influential leader was unimpressed with Tommy’s assertion; former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

“Tommy said he did not charge Dr Zakir Naik (Islamic preacher) because of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s instruction.

“He also said that those detained for links with LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) were released after getting Mahathir and his Cabinet’s green light.

“And you say Mahathir never interfered in the AG Chambers’ work?” he asked.

Last week, Tommy released his memoir entitled My Story – Justice in the Wilderness, detailing his trials and tribulations serving as the first non-bumiputera AG for 20 months.

Among others, Tommy claimed that Mahathir asked for the latter’s resignation just a day after being appointed, following backlash from several Malay groups.

After Mahathir’s abrupt resignation in February last year, Tommy said the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong had wanted to appoint former Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as the Interim Prime Minister but the Langkawi MP nominated himself instead.

Unimpressed by Tommy’s revelations, Najib queried the former on who made the decision to withdraw corruption charges against former Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng and other politicians aligned to Mahathir.

“And what about decisions to charge Mahathir’s foes in court? Why didn’t Tommy write about that?” the Pekan MP asked.

On related matter, legal activist Shamseer Singh Thind also poured scorn on Tommy’s claims saying it served the latter and DAP right for supporting Mahathir.

“Why telling all this now? Is it because he has published a book and he wants us to buy a copy?” asked the former DAP member.

Shamseer also mocked Tommy for saying it was dangerous to have the AG to also act as the public prosecutor.

“You said that it is dangerous for the AG to act also as the public prosecutor. So, what have you done to separate them?” he asked. – Feb 1, 2021.
