Not long after, Anwar mentioned in his first press conference after clocking in as prime minister that his main priority at the moment is to tackle the cost of living issue.

“I have sought a detailed discussion on immediate steps to be taken to reduce this pressure (on the people) and I will hold an urgent meeting with the relevant departments and agencies soon.

“If they don’t mind, I’m asking to meet this weekend or by Monday at the latest. I know it’s a public holiday, but if they don’t mind, they can postpone the day off,” he added.

According to Anwar, he believes the officers will entertain his request as they understand the urgency of the matter.

Meanwhile, the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) reported that the consumer price index for last year increased by 4% compared to October 2021.

DOSM added that this rate still outpaced Malaysia’s average inflation rate from January 2011 to October 2022 (2%).
