THE Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a weather alert for continuous rain in four states facing the South China Sea for five consecutive days starting next Tuesday (Nov 19).
The affected areas include Kelantan (Tumpat, Pasir Mas, Kota Bharu, Tanah Merah, Bachok, Machang and Pasir Puteh), Terengganu, parts of Pahang (Kuantan, Pekan, Rompin), and Johor (Segamat, Kluang, Mersing, Kulai, Kota Tinggi and Johor Bahru).
The alert, categorised as “caution level” is issued when signs of rain or thunderstorms lasting over six hours are detected.
MetMalaysia predicts heavy rainfall due to the Northeast Monsoon peak in late November, with rainfall 20% to 40% above normal in affected areas.
Meanwhile, the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency advises safety preparations, including using Personal Locator Beacons for emergencies during maritime activities amid the monsoon season. – Nov 16, 2024
