Floods: No one had helped us from the start, a Taman Seri Muda resident laments

A family living in Taman Sri Muda, Section 25, Shah Alam lamented that the authorities have yet to come and help them despite being stuck in flood waters since yesterday.

“We have no food and water. The electricity supply went out since 8pm yesterday and we are helpless now.

“Two boats came earlier today to evacuate two families but they have not come back for us. It looked more like a personal arrangement rather than from the authorities,” Gunavathy Seenivasan told FocusM.

The 47-year-old accounts executive said that although the rain had stopped this morning, flood waters were still rising around her residential area, which is inhabited by nearly 100 families.

She added that water levels have inundated the first floor of her double-storey house, with much of her furniture and electrical appliances such as television, refrigerator and stove being damaged by the flood.

“Our vehicles such as motorcycle and cars got damaged due to the flood. My husband, K Ravichandran tried to going out to seek help but he himself almost drowned due to the rising flood waters.

“Our neighbour tried to leave as well but their child almost drowned too until my husband shouted at them and told them to get back inside,” Gunavathy added.

On whether she tried reaching out for help from the authorities, Gunavathy said that the residents have tried calling them for help but with little success.

Stuck and desperate

“Personally, I tried calling the state secretariat number for help but the line was engaged. When I managed to reach them, they told me that their team were overwhelmed with calls and at a loss on what to do,” she mentioned.

Gunavathy stated that her sister, who lives at an apartment located in the same housing area, were also affected by the rising flood waters.

“It seems water level have covered the first floor of her apartment but they are still okay as they live in a high-rise building.”

Guvanathy then urged the Government to provide help as soon as possible to the families stranded in Taman Sri Muda as they are now fearing for their safety.

“We are still managing but there are families in the housing area struggling to survive the natural disaster with young children at hand. Please help us,” she remarked.

On related matter, #TamanSriMuda is trending on Twitter, with many of its residents and well-wishers taking to social media to detail their ordeal.

Taman Sri Muda, Shah Alam needs help!

Netizen Johanis, on the other hand, lashed out at Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob for taking his own sweet time to respond to the distress calls made by the affected public.

“Taman Sri Muda has been asking for help since 11 pm and it’s currently 4.30am and there are people still reaching out for help in that area right now with their babies and bedridden elderly and you’re telling us to CHILL?” she queried. – Dec 19, 2021.
