IT is a common enough sight on Malaysian roads that no one actually blinks anymore: the scene where scores of young daredevils perform variety of stunts on their motorcycles while speeding on public highways and byways.
A recent post by news portal Mynewshub (@mynewshub) on X highlights this phenomena where the police in an unmarked vehicle caught these mat rempits doing their thing on busy road in broad daylight.
These young men showed scant regard for their own safety, never mind the welfare of other road users.

The post noted with glee that these bikers would soon be getting a visit by the PDRM with summons in hand.
However, most netizens were quick to point out that it is one thing to get a summons but quite another for the police to inform parents they need to visit the morgue or the grief their families would have to endure.
While another urged these mat rempits to think of their folks who will have to take care for them should they suffer serious injuries.
The above exhortation are clearly no deterrent to these daredevils. Hence some netizens say heavy punitive measures are required and not just a measly fine which their parents will settle.
Another netizen highlighting the nuisance they are to public servants who will have to clean up their body parts from the roads post-accident.
One netizen sarcastically asked where were the politicians who would conveniently defend the mat rempits.
Meanwhile, another wheeled out the oft-heard excuse from friends and relatives of these law-breakers.
Another netizen claimed that this was very expensive “hobby” as the price is the hobbyist’s life.
Given that this menace has existed for decades with no solution seemingly in sight, one clearly fed-up netizen posted a comment whose sentiments is probably shared by many others. – Nov 1, 2024
