PARTI Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) urged newly-minted Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob to follow through his predecessor’s promises of reforms, such as imposing a term limit for premiers and enact anti-party hopping law.
“I hope these reforms will become part of the national agenda and the thrust of our democratic agenda as espoused by former Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
“This will work in tandem with the ‘Keluarga Malaysia’ theme touted by Ismail Sabri,” said its youth information chief Mohd Ashraf Mustaqim Badrul Munir in a Facebook post.
Before being ousted from power, Muhyiddin reached out to Pakatan Harapan on a series of reforms should they support him to stay in power.
However, the Opposition bloc rejected his overtures which led to Muhyiddin quitting his post.
It is note that Bersatu was said to be opposed to enacting anti-hopping law when it was part of the Pakatan coalition, then led by former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
While Pakatan did table a Bill to cap the tenure of a prime minister while holding federal power, the Bill was revoked by Perikatan Nasional, which was led by Bersatu after quitting Pakatan.
Ashraf said that the new cooperation between the Government and the Opposition was a legacy left behind by Muhyiddin, which would provide long-lasting solutions to issues plaguing the country lately.
“It’s appropriate for us to set aside petty politics at this juncture as it will help the Government to focus its energy on helping the people.
“The new synergy between both sides will give a breath of fresh air and hope to our people who are longing for stability,” he remarked. – Aug 26, 2021
