Foreign buying on Bursa remains elevated for the 4th consecutive week

FOREIGN investors remained net buyers for the week ended Sept 3 which saw an inflow amounting to RM786.42 mil – the fourth week in a row of net buying by them.

As the market reopened last Monday (Aug 30), foreign investors were net buyers amounting to RM513.62 mil while local institutions and retailers were net sellers to the tune of -RM485.65 mil and -RM27.97 mil respectively.

“Foreign investors were net buyers for every day of the week,” observed MIDF Research in its weekly fund flow report. “Their largest foreign inflow was recorded on Monday (Aug 30) with the smallest inflow on Thursday (Sept 2) amounting to RM6.78 mil.”

As for the retailers, they were net buyers every day of the week except on Monday (Aug 30). Their largest net buying was recorded on Thursday (Sept 2) while their smallest net buying occurred on Wednesday (Sept 1) to the tune of RM84.92 mil and RM4.68 mil respectively.

Cumulatively, retailers net bought RM85.98 mil worth of equities on Bursa Malaysia during the week.

On the contrary, local institutions recorded cumulative weekly net selling to the tune of -RM872.40 mil. They were net sellers for every day of the week with the largest net selling on Monday (Aug 30) to the tune of -RM485.65 mil.

Since the beginning of 2021, retailers have cumulatively been the only net buyers on the Malaysian equity market to the tune of RM9.55 bil while both local institutions and foreign investors were net sellers amounting to -RM5.33 bil and -RM4.22 bil respectively.

In terms of participation, retail investors, local institutions and foreign investors recorded a weekly movement of 3.68%, 5.99% and 27.81% respectively in average daily trade value (ADTV).

In comparison with another three Southeast Asian markets tracked by MIDF Research last week, all four markets posted net inflow with Thailand leading the pack with US$304.74 mil followed by Malaysia (US$189.35 mil), Indonesia (US$89.07 mil) and the Philippines (US$9.05 mil).

The top three stocks with the highest net money inflow last week were Public Bank Bhd (RM4.61 mil), Telekom Malaysia Bhd (RM2.71 mil) and CIMB Group Holdings Bhd (RM3.25 mil). – Sept 6, 2021
