Foreign funds broke 5-week selling streak on final week of 2021

OFFSHORE investors ended their five-week outflow streak as the curtain came down on 2021.

Based on data from Bursa Malaysia, international investors acquired RM17.77 mil net of local equities during the final week of 2021 compared to a net outflow -RM38.16 mil the previous week.

“In 2021, international funds were net buyers for a total of 22 weeks,” observed MIDF Research in its weekly fund flow report.

As the market reopened last Monday (Dec 27), local institutions and foreign investors were net buyers amounting to RM2.73 mil and RM56.73 mil respectively while retailers were net sellers to the tune of -RM59.46 mil.

Foreign investors were net buyers for most sessions of the week except on Wednesday (Dec 29) and Friday (Dec 31). Their largest inflow was recorded on Tuesday (Dec 28) which came in at RM110.37 mil.

On the contrary, retailers were net sellers during every session, a trend reversal in 2021. Their largest net selling was recorded on Friday (Dec 31) at -RM105.28 mil.

During the week, retailers net sold -RM292.59 mil worth of equities on Bursa Malaysia. To note, this was only the second week that retailers recorded net selling after nine consecutive weeks on inflow.

Meanwhile, local institutions recorded cumulative weekly net buying to the tune of RM274.82 mil. They were net buyers for every session of the week except on Tuesday (Dec 28) with -RM56.39 mil.

The largest net buying which amounted to RM217.98 mil occurred on Friday (Dec 31).

Cumulatively, retailers were the only net buyers on Bursa Malaysia in 2021 to the tune of RM12.14 bil while both local institutions and foreign investors were net sellers to the tune of -RM8.99 bil and -RM3.15 bil respectively.

In terms of participation, retail investors, local institutions and the foreign investors recorded a weekly movement of 12.85%, 26.32% and -12.30% respectively in terms of average daily trade value (ADTV).

In comparison with another three Southeast Asian markets tracked by MIDF Research last week, all markets posted inflows with Thailand topping the list at US$465.77 mil followed by Indonesia (US$35.06 mil), the Philippines (US$13.89 mil) and Malaysia (US$4.15 mil).

The top three stocks with the highest net money inflow last week were Nestle (M) Bhd (RM5.18 mil), Top Glove Corp Bhd (RM2.77 mil) and Sime Darby Bhd (RM2.52 mil). – Jan 3, 2022
