Foreign funds keep their buying streak on Bursa Malaysia for 5th week in a row

FOREIGN investors continued their net buying momentum on Bursa Malaysia for the fifth consecutive week last week with an inflow of RM465.5 mil.

It was a week that saw foreign investors net buying every trading day which last happened during the week ended Feb 24, according to MIDF Research.

“They net bought RM800,000 on Monday (Aug 7), RM84.5 mil on Tuesday (Aug 8), RM209.7 mil on Wednesday (Aug 9), RM66.3m on Thursday (Aug 10) and RM104.2 mil on Friday (Aug 12),” the research house pointed in its weekly fund flow report.

The top three sectors that saw net foreign inflows were financial services (RM274.3 mil), technology (RM66.0 mil) and plantation (RM65.0 mil). The only sectors with net foreign outflows for the week were healthcare (-RM72.2 mil), REITs (-RM22.0 mil) and energy (-RM0.7 mil). Year-to-date (YTD), foreigners have net sold -RM2.46 bil.

On the contrary, local institutions remained net sellers of domestic equities for the fifth straight week with an outflow of -RM321.9 mil last week. They only net bought RM23.0 mil on Monday (Aug 7) and were net sellers for the rest of the week. YTD, local institutions have been net buyers at RM2.68 bil.

Like the local institutions, local retailers also net sold for the fifth consecutive week at a much higher rate of -RM143.7 mil compared to -RM8.5 mil in the previous week. YTD, local retailers have net sold -RM220.1 mil.

In terms of participation, there was a decline in average daily trading volume (ADTV) among retail investors and institutional investors by -2.4% and -5.8% respectively while that of foreign investors remained unchanged.

In comparison with another four Southeast Asian markets tracked by MIDF Research last week, only Malaysia posted a net foreign fund inflow with US$101.7 mil while Indonesia recorded the highest net outflow at -US$1.07 bil, followed by Vietnam (-US$30.9 mil), the Philippines (-US$16.2 mil) and Thailand (-US$3.4 mil)
