FOREIGN investors returned as net buyers on Bursa Malaysia for the week ended April 22 with a net inflow of RM247.62 mil after turning net sellers the previous week (outflow amounted to -RM60.11 mil).
They were joined by local retailers who maintained their net buying position at RM25.74 mil but local institutions continued their net selling streak at -RM273.35 mil last week, according to MIDF Research.
“To date, international funds have been net buyers for 13 out of 16 weeks of 2022 with a total net inflow of RM7.16 bil,” observed the research house in a weekly fund flow report.
“They were net sellers last Monday (April 18) at -RM75.28 mil and but turned net buyers from Wednesday (April 20) to Friday (April 22). The stock market was closed on Tuesday (April 19) to observe the Nuzul Al-Quran”
Meanwhile, local institutions were net buyers on Monday (April 18) at RM73.59 mil before turning net sellers from Wednesday (April 20) to Friday (April 22).
They have been net sellers for 11 consecutive weeks since the week ended Feb 11 and have been net sellers for 14 out of 16 weeks this year. Year-to-date (YTD), local institutions have sold RM7.77 bil worth of equities.
As for local retailers, their movement was rather mixed last week with two days of net buying on Monday (April 18) and Friday (April 22) and two days of net selling net selling on Wednesday (April 20) and Thursday (April 21). YTD, local retailers have been net buyers at RM613.89 mil.
In terms of participation, foreign investors saw an increase in the average daily trade value (ADTV) by 9.67% while local retailers and local institutions encountered declines of -8.12% and -1.99% respectively.
In comparison with another three Southeast Asian markets tracked by MIDF Research last week, Indonesia posted a fifth straight week of net inflow at US$373.5 mil followed by Thailand with a streak of 13 consecutive weeks at US$97.5 mil and Malaysia with US$57.3 mil. However, the Philippines continued to encounter outflow with -US$15.54 mil.
