Foreign funds remain net buyers on Bursa despite prevailing bearish sentiment

FOREIGN investors continued to be net buyers on the local bourse for the week ended May 20 with net inflows totalling RM26.15 mil.

However, local retailers turned net sellers after five consecutive weeks of net buying with net outflows of -RM8.03 mil, according to MIDF Research.

“Year-to-date (YTD), international funds have been net buyers for 16 out of the 20 weeks of 2022 with total net inflows of RM7 bil,” observed the research house in its weekly fund flow report.

“They were net sellers on Tuesday (May 17) and Wednesday (May 18) at -RM51.97 mil and -RM10.60 mil respectively.”

Meanwhile, local institutions continued to be net sellers with a net selling position totalling -RM18.12 mil last week. They were net buyers on Tuesday (May 17) and Wednesday (May 18) to the tune of RM57.68 mil and RM13.23 mil respectively.

The highest net selling was recorded on Friday (May 20) at -RM63.07 mil while the smallest net selling occurred on Thursday (May 19) at -RM25.96 mil.

“They have been net sellers for 17 out of 20 weeks this year. YTD, they have sold RM8.11 bil of equities on Bursa Malaysia,” noted MIDF Research.

Local retailers were net sellers from Tuesday (May 17) to Thursday (May 19) with a total net selling of -RM13.55 mil. The exception was on Friday (May 20) whereby they posted a net buying of RM5.52 mil for the week.

In terms of participation, foreign investors saw an increase in their average daily trade value (ADTV) by +13.14%. Local retailers saw a decline of -1.06% while local institutions posted a drop of -0.75%.

In comparison with another three Southeast Asian markets tracked by MIDF Research last week, Thailand was the biggest net inflow gainer among foreign funds with US$271.06 mil followed by Malaysia (US$5.94 mil) while both Indonesia and the Philippines encountered outflows of US$9.58 mil and US$9.81 mil respectively.

The top three stocks with the highest net money inflow last week were Malayan Banking Bhd (Maybank) (RM2.92 mil), IHH Healthcare Bhd (RM2.56 mil) and Hong Leong Bank Bhd (RM2.3 mil). – May 23, 2022
