Foreign funds remain net sellers on Bursa for fourth week in a row

MALAYSIAN equities saw the fourth consecutive week of net outflow albeit at a slower pace last week.

Based on data from Bursa Malaysia, foreign investors were net sellers with stock disposal amounting to -RM348.36 mil last week compared to -RM383.76 mil in the preceding week.

As the market reopened last Monday (Dec 13), local institutions and retailers were net buyers amounting to RM9.02 mil and RM44.19 mil respectively while foreign investors were net sellers to the tune of -RM53.21 mil.

“Foreign investors were net seller for every session during the week,” observed MIDF Research in its weekly fund flow report. Their largest foreign outflow was recorded on Tuesday (Dec 14) which came in at -RM153.28 mil.

On the contrary, retailers were net buyers for every session of the week. Their largest net buying was recorded on Monday (Dec 13) at RM44.19 mil. For the week, retailers net bought RM126.45 mil worth of equities on Bursa Malaysia.

Meanwhile, local institutions recorded cumulative weekly net buying to the tune of RM221.92 mil. Like the retailers, local institutions were also net buyers for every session of the week with their largest net buying occurring on Tuesday (Dec 14) to the tune of RM115.82 mil.

Since the beginning of 2021, retailers have cumulatively been the only net buyers on Bursa Malaysia amounting to RM12.44 bil while both local institutions and foreign investors were net sellers to with -RM9.31 bil and -RM3.13 bil respectively.

In terms of market participation, retail investors, local institutions and the foreign investors recorded a weekly movement of -4.93%, -0.59% and 15.11% respectively in terms of average daily trade value (ADTV).

In comparison with another three Southeast Asian markets tracked by MIDF Research last week, the Philippines and Thailand recorded an inflow of foreign funds last week with RM1.61 bil and US$254.86 mil respectively while Malaysia and Indonesia posted a net outflow of -US$82.44 mil and -US$147.89 mil respectively.

The top three stocks with the highest net money inflow last week were Inari Amerton Bhd (RM5.32 mil), Petronas Gas Bhd (RM3.71 mil) and Bursa Malaysia Bhd (RM1.27 mil). – Dec 20, 2021
