Foreign investors’ net buying streak on Bursa broken after seven weeks

AFTER a seven-week streak of net buying, foreign investors turned net sellers on Bursa Malaysia for the week ended Oct 1 which saw net outflow of -RM341.94 mil.

As the market reopened last Monday (Sept 27), foreign investors and retailers were net buyers amounting to RM7.03 mil and RM67.21 mil respectively with local institutions being net sellers to the tune of -RM74.25 mil.

“Foreign investors were net buyers for majority of the week except on Thursday (Sept 30) and Friday (Oct 1),” observed MIDF Research in its weekly fund flow report.

“The largest foreign inflow was recorded on Tuesday (Sept 28) with the largest outflow on Friday (Oct 1) to the tune of RM72.70 mil and -RM233.65 mil respectively.”

Retailers were net buyers for everyday of the week except on Thursday (Sept 30). Their largest net buying by was recorded on Friday (Oct 1) while their smallest net buying was on Tuesday (Sept 30) to the tune of RM90.92 mil and RM4.35 mil respectively.

Cumulatively, retailers net bought RM184.95 mil worth of equities in Bursa Malaysia during the week.

Meanwhile, local institutions recorded cumulative weekly net selling to the tune of -RM156.98 mil.

They were net sellers for majority of the week except on Thursday (Sept 30) and Friday (Oct 1) with their largest net selling on Tuesday (Sept 28) to the tune of -RM77.05 mil while their largest inflow was on Thursday (Sept 30) amounting to RM211.11 mil.

Since the beginning of 2021, retailers have cumulatively been the only net buyers on Bursa Malaysia to the tune of RM10.47 bil while local institutions and foreign investors have been net sellers to the tune of -RM6.48 bil and -RM3.99 bil respectively.

In terms of participation, retail investors, local institutions and the foreign investors recorded a weekly movement of +10.67%, +12.98% and +50.55% respectively in average daily trade value (ADTV).

In comparison with another three Southeast Asian markets tracked by MIDF Research last week, Thailand was the only market which posted an inflow at US$58.36 mil while Indonesia incurring the biggest net outflow at US$809.43 mil followed by Malaysia (US$81.77 mil) and the Philippines posted (US$29.93 mil).

The top three stocks with the highest net money inflow last week were Petronas Gas Bhd (RM3.12 mil), Yinson Holdings Bhd (RM1.35 mil) and MY E.G. Services Bhd (RM1.34 mil). – Oct 4, 2021
