Foreign investors remain net buyers on Bursa but net inflow diminishing

FOREIGN investors remained net buyers on Bursa Malaysia for the week ended Nov 19 – the seventh week of net inflow – although their net inflow has moderated to RM66.61 mil (week ended Nov 12: RM359.14 mil).

As the market re-opened last Monday (Nov 15), both local institutions and retailers were net sellers and net buyers respectively with a sum of -RM121.97 mil and RM58.18 mil while foreign investors were net buyers to the tune of RM63.79 mil.

“Foreign investors were net buyers for most part of the week except on Friday (Nov 19),” observed MIDF Research in its weekly fund flow report. “Their largest inflow was recorded on Monday (Nov 15) with the only outflow on Friday (Nov 19) to the tune of RM63.79 mil and -RM84.37 mil respectively.”

Meanwhile, retailers were net buyers for the entire week. Their largest net buying was recorded on Monday (Nov 15) while their smallest net buying occurred on Thursday (Nov 18) amounting to RM58.18 mil and RM22.99 mil respectively.

For the week, retailers net bought RM228.38 mil worth of equities on Bursa Malaysia.

Local institutions recorded cumulative weekly net selling amounting to -RM294.99 mil as they were net sellers for most part of the week except on Friday (Nov 19).

Their largest net selling took place on Monday (Nov 15) to the tune of -RM121.97 mil while their only net inflow on Friday raked in RM31.88 mil.

Since the beginning of 2021, retailers have cumulatively been the only net buyers on Bursa Malaysia to the tune of RM11.59 bil. Local institutions and foreign investors were both net sellers amounting to -RM9.90 bil and -RM1.68 bil respectively.

In terms of market participation, retail investors, local institutions and the foreign investors recorded a weekly movement of 17.38%, 13.63% and 34.34% respectively in average daily trade value (ADTV).

In comparison with another three Southeast Asian markets tracked by MIDF Research last week, only Malaysia recorded a net inflow with US$16.03 mil while the rest saw net outflow with Indonesia at -US$169.62 mil, Thailand at -US$60.39 mil and the Philippines at -US$33.83 mil.

The top three stocks with the highest net money inflow last week were Malayan Banking Bhd (Maybank) (RM9.89 mil), Bursa Malaysia Bhd (RM2.97 mil) and Yinson Holdings Bhd (RM2.86 mil). – Nov 22, 2021
