Foreign net selling on Bursa Malaysia hit RM2 bil mark to-date

FOREIGN investors have not budged from being net sellers in the local bourse for the week ended April 16 which saw an outflow of -RM235.26 mil, the highest in two weeks.

As the market re-opened last Monday (April 12), foreign investors sold -RM48.67 mil net of local equities with retailers and local institutions both emerging net buyers and net sellers to the tune of RM60.81 mil and -RM12.41 mil respectively.

“Foreign investors were net sellers every day except on Thursday (April 15),” noted the MIDF Research weekly fund flow report.

“The largest foreign outflow was recorded on Tuesday (April 13) at -RM39 mil while the smallest outflow was on Friday (April 16) at -RM50.89 mil. The only inflow recorded was on Thursday (April 15) to the tune of RM78.58 mil.”

As for the retailers, they were net buyers every day except on Thursday (April 15) and Friday (April 16). Their largest net buying by was recorded on Monday (April 12) at RM60.81 mil while the smallest purchase was on Tuesday (April 13) at RM35 mil.

For the week, retailers cumulatively net bought RM97.82 mil worth of equities on Bursa Malaysia with local institutions cumulative contributed to a weekly inflow of RM137.45 mil.

Their biggest net buying was on Tuesday (April 13) at RM126.52 mil with the smallest net buying on Wednesday (April 14) at RM16.65 mil while the biggest net selling happened on Thursday (April 15) at -RM61.28 mil.

Since the beginning of 2021, retailers have cumulatively been the only net buyers in the Malaysian equity market to the tune of RM5.50 bil. Local institutions and foreign investors were net sellers to the tune of -RM3.50 bil and -RM2 bil respectively.

In terms of participation, retail investors, local institutions and foreign investors recorded a weekly increase of 7.53%, 19.43% and 4.68% respectively in average daily trade value (ADTV).

In comparison to another three Southeast Asian markets tracked by MIDF Research last week, Indonesia and Thailand recorded a net inflow of US$60.61 mil and US$9.13 mil while the Philippines and Malaysia saw a net outflow of US$84.88 mil and US$56.91 mil respectively.

The top three stocks with the highest net money inflow last week were Press Metal Aluminium Holdings Bhd (RM4.03 mil), Malayan Banking Bhd (Maybank) (RM1.53 mil) and Petronas Chemicals Group Bhd (RM1.43 mil). – April 19, 2021
