Foreign net selling on Bursa reaches RM6 bil year-to-date

FOREIGN investors remained net sellers on the local bourse for the week ended Aug 6 which saw an outflow amounting to -RM451.09 mil. This marked their seventh consecutive week of net selling.

As the market re-opened last Monday (Aug 2), foreign investors were net sellers amounting to -RM82.90 mil while both local institutions and retailers mopped up +RM46.60 mil and + RM36.30 mi net of local equities respectively.

“Foreign investors were net seller every day of the week,” observed MIDF Research in its weekly fund flow report. “The largest foreign outflow was recorded on Friday (Aug 6) with the smallest outflow on Thursday (Aug 5) to the tune of -RM133.77 mil and -RM36.80 mil respectively.”

On the contrary, retail investors were net buyers during the entire week. Their largest net buying was recorded on Wednesday (Aug 4) at +RM112.28 mil while their smallest net buying was on Monday (Aug 2) to the tune of +RM36.30 mil.

Cumulatively, retailers net bought +RM329.30 mil worth of equities in Bursa Malaysia during the whole of last week.

Meanwhile, local institutions recorded a cumulative weekly net buying to the tune of +RM121.70 mil. They were net buyers on Monday (Aug 2), Wednesday (Aug 3) and Friday (Aug 6) with the largest net buying on Friday (Aug 6) to the tune of +RM279.86 mil.

Since the beginning of 2021, retailers have cumulatively been the only net buyers on Bursa Malaysia to the tune of +RM9.30 bil. Both local institutions and foreign investors were net sellers amounting to -RM3.31 bil and -RM5.99 bil respectively.

In terms of participation, retail investors, local institutions and the foreign investors recorded a weekly movement of -8.66%, -2.32% and -1.75% respectively in average daily trade value (ADTV).

In comparison with another three Southeast Asian markets tracked by MIDF Research last week, Thailand posted the biggest outflow at -US$244.58 mil followed by Malaysia (-US$106.88 mil) while Indonesia and the Philippines saw an inflow of +US$84.70 mil and +US$7.86 mil respectively.

The top three stocks with the highest net money inflow last week were Inari Amerton Bhd (RM4.98 mil), IHH Healthcare Bhd (RM4.57 mil) and Public Bank Bhd (RM2.02 mil). – Aug 9, 2021
