Foreign outflow on Bursa remains unabated for third week running

MALAYSIAN equities saw a third consecutive week of net outflow albeit at a slower pace last week.

Based on data from Bursa Malaysia, foreign investors sold -RM383.76 mil net of local equities last week compared to -RM550.90 mil net in the preceding week.

As the market reopened last Monday (Dec 6), local institutions and retailers were net buyers respectively amounting to RM133.90 mil and RM57.93 mil while foreign investors were net sellers to the tune of -RM191.82 mil.

“Foreign investors were net sellers for every session of the week,” observed MIDF Research in its weekly fund flow report. “Their largest outflow was recorded on Monday (Dec 6) with the smallest outflow occurring on Thursday (Dec 9) with at -RM14.82 mil.”

On the contrary, retailers were net buyers for every session during the week with their largest net buying recorded on Friday (Dec 10) at RM72.13 mil. For the week, retailers net bought RM222.60 mil worth of equities on Bursa Malaysia.

Meanwhile, local institutions recorded a cumulative weekly net buying to the tune of RM161.17 mil. Local institutions were net buyers for every session during the week except on Thursday (Dec 9).

Their largest net buying was on Monday (Dec 6) to the tune of RM133.90 mil while their only net outflow on Thursday (Dec 9) amounted to -RM14.21 mil.

Since the beginning of 2021, retailers have cumulatively been the only net buyers on Bursa Malaysia to the tune of RM12.32 bil. Local institutions and foreign investors were net sellers amounting to -RM9.53 bil and -RM2.78 bil respectively.

In terms of participation, retail investors, local institutions and the foreign investors recorded a weekly movement of -48.45%, -48.93% and -69.45% respectively in terms of average daily trade value (ADTV).

In comparison with another three Southeast Asian markets tracked by MIDF Research last week, both Indonesia and the Philippines recorded inflow of foreign investors amounting to US$287.86 mil and RM157.80 mil respectively.

However, Malaysia and Thailand incurred net outflows of -US$90.79 mil and -US$56.56 mil respectively.

The top three stocks with the highest net money inflow last week were Press Metal Aluminium Holdings Bhd (RM1.95 mil), MISC Bhd (RM1.55 mil) and Bursa Malaysia Bhd (RM1.27 mil). – Dec 13, 2021
