Foreign selling at Bursa Malaysia reaches ‘aggravated’ level

FOREIGN investors turned net sellers again for the week ended July 2 with an outflow of -RM499.25 mil. This was the second consecutive week of aggressive net selling by foreign investors (week ended June 25: RM469.52 mil).

As the market reopened last Monday (June 28), foreign investors sold -RM126.69 mil net of local equities with retailers and local institutions both as net buyers to the tune of RM1103.32 mil and RM23.37 mil respectively.

“Foreign investors were net seller every day last week,” MIDF Research pointed out in its weekly fund flow report. “Largest foreign outflow was recorded on Wednesday (June 30) with the smallest outflow on Friday (July 2) to the tune of -RM206 mil and -RM28.66 mil respectively.”

On the contrary, retailers were net buyers every day of the week with their largest net buying recorded on Monday (June 28) at +RM103.32 mil and smallest net buying on Friday (July 2) to the tune of RM13.87 mil.

Cumulatively, retailers net bought +RM309.56 mil worth of equities in Bursa Malaysia during the week.

Meanwhile, local institutions recorded a cumulative weekly inflow amounting to +RM189.69 mil.

The only net selling done by local institutions was on Tuesday (July 29) at -RM44.32 mil. Conversely, the largest net buying was on Wednesday (June 30) to the tune of +RM137.39 mil.

Since the beginning of 2021, retailers are cumulatively the only net buyers in the Malaysian equity market to the tune of RM8.21 bil. Local institutions and foreign investors were net sellers to the tune of -RM3.89 bil and -RM4.31 bil respectively.

In terms of participation, foreign investors recorded a weekly movement of +5.20% while retail investors and local institutions posted a weekly movement of-2.53% and +2.83% respectively in average daily trade value (ADTV).

In comparison with another three Southeast Asian markets tracked by MIDF Research last week, all markets posted outflow with Thailand incurring US$169.02 mil followed by Malaysia (US$120.27 mil), the Philippines (US$81.63 mil) and Indonesia (US$53.18 mil).

The top three stocks with the highest net money inflow last week were Tenaga Nasional Bhd (RM2.39 mil), Petronas Chemicals Group Bhd (RM1.84 mil) and Genting Plantations Bhd (RM1.1 mil). – July 5, 2021
