Forget banana fritters, now the trend is frying bananas with the skin intact

PREVIOUSLY Malaysians have braved the rain and darkness, making long beelines at the side of the road just to eat maggi at Maggi Malam.

Then there was the ridiculousness of having to bring your own nacho bag to a stall, where cheese, meat and salad is added to it.

And when we thought our gastronomic adventure would finally come to an end, here comes another netizen to showcase a new food that has been steadily gaining traction.

Forget fried banana fritters. It is now fried bananas with the skin intact. In a video post on X by netizen JalalMisai, a street stall could be seen frying dozens of unpeeled bananas.

Netizens could observe the cooked ones resembling spoiled bananas fermenting in the open.

Nowhere in the video did it mention the rationale behind this strange cooking technique, but nevertheless, it caught people’s attention.

JalalMisai added that if this meal ever arrives at Malaysian shores, many people are bound to make a beeline to the stall. “Our people simply can’t resist such peculiar meals,” he added.

But what are the netizens’ take regarding the fried unpeeled banana?

Bulan said that it resembled a pengat pisang, or a variation of it. Fun fact: The pengat is composed of sliced bananas added into a mixture of santan, usually served as a dessert.

Another netizen claimed that the meal did not appeal to her appetite.

Then there are several netizens who made subtle shots at the trending nacho food truck where customers had to bring their own bag of nachos to be served.

Mohd Rajit Hj Suja said sooner or later, people during the fasting month may even buy something as strange as rocks being steamed and laced with margarine.

Will this strange meal command a premium price upon arrival to Malaysia? Knowing our appetite and adventurous spirit when it comes to dining, it probably would.

Looking at those dirty, brown things, we just can’t help thinking that they are some really weird looking sausages.

But then again, knowing our Malaysian crowd, weird oftentimes equals popular. We hope this doesn’t become a trend anytime soon in Malaysia.

But if it does, we will be the first in line. Speak of hypocrisy. —Nov 24, 2024
