Form the National Education Action Council to draft post-COVID-19 plan

OPPOSITION leaders urged the Government to establish the National Education Action Council to come up with a plan on how take the Malaysian education system forward post COVID-19.

“The council should comprise of experts from various fields, including professionals, academicians, teachers and representatives from the Parent-Teachers’ Association.

“We have made this suggestion numerous times but it has fallen on deaf ears,” the Pakatan Harapan Education Committee said, in a statement.

Last week, the committee had lashed out at the Education Ministry (MoE) for dragging its feet in helping students affected by the pandemic and improve on the home-based teaching and learning (PDPR).

It urged the ministry to step up and prepare Form 5 students accordingly so that they will be well equipped to sit for the SPM and SPMV examinations later.

“The ministry’s failure to manage SPM/SPMV 2020 has caused tremendous amount of mental and physical stress to our students, teachers and parents. This has been reported extensively by the media.

“Unfortunately, our minister and his two deputies chose to ignore their agony, which was not surprising actually.

“But we cannot allow such failure to repeat itself this year. If it happens again, it only shows that the Government has failed our future generation,” it was reported saying.

On that note, the committee urged MoE to conduct a study on how many students were left out in the PDPR system and frame a plan to address the matter.

“The data should be made public so that everyone can contribute ideas on how to improve, to ensure no students are left out in the education process,” it opined.

Offering solutions, the committee urged the Government to create a website, which will serve as a one-stop centre for all teachers to download learning and teaching modules and other tools to aid PDPR.

“Utilise all the resources from MoE, Communications and Multimedia Ministry and other agencies to expand education services, including a dedicated television channel for education purposes to aid the process,” it remarked. – June 15, 2021.
