MALAYSIA’s anti-corruption authorities are intensifying their investigation into former prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, following the seizure of more than RM100mil in cash from a home belonging to one of his former aides.
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) recovered the money, found stashed in multiple bags and safes across several rooms, during a raid as part of a wider probe into allegations of abuse of power and money laundering involving Ismail’s ex-staff.
The raid, conducted by MACC’s special investigation team, also led to the confiscation of documents, jewellery and electronic devices.
Ismail, who is also the Bera MP, was questioned by the MACC for five hours on Feb 18 at their Putrajaya headquarters. The interrogation was part of investigations into promotional and publicity spending under the Keluarga Malaysia campaign during his tenure as prime minister, said a pro-Pakatan Harapan news portal.
The questioning preceded a health scare for Ismail, who collapsed and was admitted to the hospital on Feb 22 due to blood pressure-related issues. He is expected to be called in again for further questioning, according to the New Straits Times. — March 1, 2025
