FINE dining isn’t always just about the taste of the meal. Presentation and ambience goes a long way towards creating the pampered environment that makes diners willing to pay for the exorbitant bill.
And that is perhaps why some restaurants decide to be creative, or perhaps too creative as can be seen in a recent video. A floating restaurant, that’s what. But just because it is creative doesn’t mean it works.
On the video, the restaurant could be seen sinking into the water due to its weight, thanks to faulty engineering. The video could be found at: https://x.com/update11111/status/1938380966697066691
According to netizen @RasyidiRasyid in the comment section, the scene was likely not in Malaysia.
Also, @RizRaj6 pointed out the inappropriateness of certain individuals who decided to record the situation instead of helping those who were fighting for their lives.
Then there was the oddball @saufi_txt who said he would be most happy in a frightful situation such as this.
He made no elaboration on his statement, but it is as ominous as the video of the sinking restaurant.
On another note, it might not be such a good idea to construct buildings by the beachside or even at the side of a lake.
According to website Wolfe Construction Group, Building near a water body often means dealing with a high water table, which can cause a range of structural challenges.
Hydrostatic pressure from saturated soil can push against foundation walls, leading to cracks, leaks, and in severe cases, structural failure.
While foundations are built to handle downward loads, this lateral water pressure can gradually weaken their stability.
Additionally, uneven settlement is common in such locations. Variations in soil moisture can cause parts of the foundation to sink at different rates, resulting in sloped floors, cracked walls, and misaligned doors or windows.
Structures near water are also vulnerable to erosion and flooding. Erosion can erode the soil supporting the foundation, while floods may cause extensive water damage and compromise structural integrity.
Lastly, soil instability is a major concern, especially in expansive soils like clay. These soils expand and shrink with moisture fluctuations, exerting additional pressure on the foundation and accelerating deterioration over time. Long story short, a floating restaurant may not be a good idea. —June 27, 2025
