Get properly prepped to enjoy a great day out hiking

HIKING has become a very popular pastime post-pandemic with the lockdowns certainly giving many a renewed appreciation for the great outdoors.

The large crowds at popular nature trails, especially on weekends, are evidence of the hobby’s growing appeal. From the serious pros to senior citizens enjoying a leisurely day out, the hobby is taking off and if you want to join in the fun, here are a few tips on how to prepare for a hike.

Weather watch

Always check the weather reports. It might not be a good idea to embark on a maiden trip if the forecast is going to be heavy rain. Many trails can be treacherous experiences after heavy rainfall unsuited for novices.

Likewise, it may be advisable to avoid hiking during heat waves. The last thing you want to happen is faint halfway up a hill from heat stroke!

Hydration matters

This may seem like common sense, but you would be surprised how many first-time hikers pack insufficient fluids. A day outdoors is never pleasant when you are parched and sweating buckets. Bring as large a bottle of water as is comfortable to carry. Better safe than sorry.

Dress for the occasion

First and foremost, this means proper shoes. Specialist hiking shoes are highly recommended as they are designed for the terrain. Generic sports shoes or sneakers may not provide the robustness required to navigate tougher terrains. More importantly, they provide safety with a firm grip when you are going uphill.

Dress for the weather but do have a raincoat on standby if possible. Just pack a disposable one in your pouch and you should be good to go.
