Gigi Coffee gets pointed out for messy fingernails in advertisement poster; branding slip-up or overreaction?

COMPANIES have every reason to make sure advertisement materials paint a favourable image for its product. After all, if they can’t even convince their clients, how will they compete in such a noisy market place?

And where advertising is concerned, people need to be really careful because a simple mistake or oversight will turn into a fiasco. Take for example a recent post on X that went viral due to a netizen pointing out a poster from Gigi Coffee.

Apparently, the fingers that held the cup of coffee had messy nails and @isusemasaviral surmised that this was unhygienic. Petty or sharp sighted, our dear readers can decide.

“Please @gigicoffeemy you can do better at your Pavilion KL outlet’s poster. That long nails with cuticles holding the cup aint giving and representing the brand well,” said @isusemasaviral.

The comment section was equally rich with comedy feedback, so let’s check them out.

“Whose hand is that in the photo, best to confess quickly,” said @zafranmustafa while @Rainism08 pointed out that such nails will prove useful to scratch any mainland Chinese customers who throw their coffee.

He was likely referring to the recent altercation between a ZUS Coffee employee and a customer. The comedy did not stop there. Netizen @zarul said the company should put a photo of a person smiling while showing his teeth.

“Then it will match with the name Gigi coffee. Or do you want to rename it to Kuku coffee?” he added. Also, @arepow2 alleged that this is a marketing strategy to subtly inform people that anyone can afford to buy Gigi coffee regardless of their nail status.

A helpful netizen also made alterations to the poster, likely through AI, to rectify the problem and here it is:

Several netizens could also be seen saying that it was petty to point out such a small mistake. A visit to the official Facebook page for Gigi Coffee revealed that the company has yet to make a statement regarding this post.

And when we are to contemplate the gravity of the situation, is it even necessary for Gigi Coffee to respond? —Jan 4, 2025
