Glove manufacturers will not tolerate scammers anymore

THE Malaysian Rubber Board (LGM) must intervene to control fraudulent glove peddlers in the country as the unscrupulous trade is sickeningly rising exponentially with increased COVID-19 cases.

Getting down to serious business, the top industry players are standing united in the fight against dishonest recycled/reused glove traders, believing that the Government is not taking serious action.

Limmas (M) Sdn Bhd CEO Lim Choon Huat urged LGM to legalise a process which only allows registered LGM members to sell gloves.

“This has gone on long enough; there seems to be more and more recycled/reused gloves in the market compared to when the issue was first raised. How is this possible?

“Although we hear of raids happening here and there, this fraudulent business is still flourishing,” he told FocusM.

Instead of depending on enforcement raids, top glove makers are rallying to present a proposal to LGM which only allows those on a selected member list to sell gloves.

Lim Choon Huat says most of the scammers ply the trade on Facebook

Limmas has started the ball rolling by sending an official letter to Hartalega Holdings Bhd – one of Malaysia’s Big Four glove makers – to initiate discussions.

The companies under the license of LGM will have to follow stringent rules and regulations, thus ensuring quality control.

Besides the health and well-being of Malaysians, Lim pointed out that this is a matter of reputation as there many foreign purchasers.

“The country’s name is at stake; we have many glove purchasers abroad who are trusting our local product. It’s an income for our country so the Government can’t afford to take this lightly.”

In addition, while the media has a big role to play in educating the public, more needs to be done to create awareness.

Lim also suggested setting up a dedicated hotline for consumers to file complaints.

Television advertisements, billboards and social media highlights, he added, will help educate the public and make it easier for them to alert authorities of scammers. – Dec 21, 2020.
