Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin score historic win in Japan Open

MALAYSIAN men’s doubles pair Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani triumphed in the men’s final of the Daihatsu Japan Open 2024 held in Yokohama, Japan today.

The pair secured their victory by defeating South Korea’s Kang Min Hyuk and Seo Seung Jae in straight sets with scores of 21-19 and 21-15.

This win is historic as it marks the first time in 22 years that a Malaysian men’s doubles team has claimed the title and the first time in 12 years that a Malaysian pair has reached the final.

Goh and Nur Izzuddin are only the fourth pair to win this prestigious championship. For their achievement, the duo will take home a cash prize of US$62,900.

Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani had earlier advanced to the final by defeating Indonesia’s Leo Rolly and Bagas Maulana with scores of 21-19 and 21-17.

They faced South Korea’s world No. 3 pair, Kang Min Hyuk and Seo Seung Jae, in the final. This victory also marks their first appearance in a Badminton World Tour Super 750 Series final.

Additionally, the Badminton Association of Malaysia has confirmed that Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani will turn professional effective September 1. – Aug 25, 2024
