RAMESH Rao, the recently appointed special officer in charge of Indian community affairs has died.
Bernama TV announced his death this morning in a brief online post.
The Deputy Prime Minister’s Office confirmed his death but no details on the cause of death is available so far. Ramesh died of a heart attack, Malaysia Gazette reported.
Last month, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced that Ramesh had been appointed to the position.
Last week, FocusM published an article on the president of Pertubuhan Minda dan Sosial Prihatin, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), after he urged the Government to ban the sale of alcohol after 10pm at all 24-hour premises on grounds that late night excessive consumption of alcohol could lead to the risks of road accidents, fights and other criminal activities.
Ramesh received a lot of backlash from netizens on the issue but also received support from conservative segments of the population for the proposal to ban alcohol sale after 10pm.
In a statement, Zahid expressed his condolences to Ramesh’s family over his passing.
“With great sadness, I and the entire staff of the Deputy Prime Minister’s Office and the Rural and Regional Development Ministry would like to extend our condolences to the family of the late Ramesh Rao a/l Krishna Naidu.
“May his family, friends and acquaintances stay patient and strong in facing the loss of their loved one.
“I really appreciate his service and dedication to the community and the country before and during his appointment.”
