Gov’t to consider removal request of “Man on the Run” on Netflix

PRIME Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has stated that the government will review a request made by former premier Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s legal team to order Netflix to take down the documentary “Man on the Run” regarding the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) scandal.

“We will consider it,” he told reporters briefly after Friday prayers.

Law firm Shafee & Co asserted that the documentary, which explores the role of fugitive businessman Jho Low in 1MDB, is sub judice and prejudicial to Najib’s ongoing trial.

The lawyers called for the removal of the documentary from Netflix claiming that interviewees, including Anwar, made sub judice remarks amounting to contempt of court.

Moreover, the legal team has also urged Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to ensure the documentary’s removal. They also called for government action against the production crew for distributing what they deem offensive content.

Najib faces trial on 25 charges of abuse of power and money laundering, relating to alleged 1MDB funds totalling RM2.28 bil deposited into his AmBank accounts between February 2011 and December 2014. The documentary, which premiered in local cinemas last October is now available on Netflix. – Jan 12, 2023
